Funko Vinyl Collectible Vinyl Figure Now Out

A few days ago I read reports that the large, non-blind-packaged Maud figure by Funko was being spotted in stores (Hot Topic, if nowhere else), leaving me to duly plan for an upcoming trip to my nearest Hot Topic. I was worried that maybe they would've sold out of the figure by the time I got there since I wasn't sure how long it'd been out or how fast these things sell, but I was happy to see that they still had one on the shelves. I grabbed it and soon noticed that it had a "Hot Topic Exclusive Pre-Release" sticker on it like my Princess Twilight Sparkle did, so I guess it's only at Hot Topic right now but will get released other places later or something.

The only nitpick I have with the package is the college-sweater-font they use, but everything else is great, especially that red backdrop they included this time around -- it really adds to it all. Now, let's take a look at it opened, in all it's well-sculpted glory.

I'm really satisfied with it -- I mean, it blows away any Hasbro release and just looks good regardless of any comparisons. A small detail I really appreciate is her non-smiling face -- the Enterplay Mane Character card for Maud had her smiling on both the front and back pictures which bugs me more than it probably should, but I just don't see it as the best representation of her considering she only smiles for a few seconds of her screen time compared to the minutes and minutes of her not smiling. But anyways, it's time for the customary hanging out with Fluttershy... and look, Pinkie Pie joined in, too.

Episodes

These are all the episodes of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic that Maud Pie's appeared in that I'm aware of:

- Episode 77 "Pinkie Pride" / Season 4
Maud's status: Quick cameo
My rating: (I haven't seen this one in too long -- it'd be wrong for me to try rating it)
Notes: Maud's only seen as a filly in a family photo for a brief moment.

- Episode 83 "Maud Pie" / Season 4
Maud's status: Starring role
My rating: ★★★★★★★★★★
Notes: My favorite episode of the entire series. Great stuff.

- Episode 98 "Make New Friends but Keep Discord" / Season 5
Maud's status: Somewhat significant speaking role
My rating: ★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Notes: Practically every character was done wrong in this one, including Maud.

- Episode 111 "Hearthbreakers" / Season 5
Maud's status: Significant speaking role
My rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆
Notes: A pretty fun episode with some great characters, but sorta hampered, in my opinion, by the overused Apple family and Maud's not 100%-on-the-spot writing.

- Episode 116 "The Cutie Re-Mark - Part 1" / Season 5
Maud's status: Quick cameo
My rating: ★★★★★★☆☆☆☆
Notes: This wasn't bad, but it just seemed like it was going to be better. Instead, it was a convoluted piece of missed opportunities. Maud appears only as an alternate reality version of herself, by the way.

- Episode 117 "The Cutie Re-Mark - Part 1" / Season 5
Maud's status: Quick cameo
My rating: ★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆
Notes: This was much like Part 1, with some parts better and some parts worse. Maud appears only as an alternate reality version of herself, by the way, and only in the "Previously on My Little Pony" segment.

- Episode 120 "The Gift of the Maud Pie" / Season 6
Maud's status: Starring role
My rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆
Notes: This is Maud's best appearance after "Maud Pie". One of my favorite episodes, I'd say.

Episode 117 Appearance

After seeing episode 116 with Maud, as I stated in my review of the episode, I kept an eye out for her to return in the second part of the story: episode 117. At the time I didn't see her show up, but upon a second viewing of the beginning of it, I found that perhaps I was reaching for some Chex Mix or something when she apparently did appear (though in my defense it was a quick appearance). It occurs during the "Previously on My Little Pony" part before the theme song, and just shows a clip of her, Pinkie Pie, and Rainbow Dash from episode 116. Nothing big, but nevertheless she's there.

With all these appearances on the show, maybe I should be making a post about them all like I do with the cards and comics...

Episode 116 Appearance

As of November 28, 2015, season 5 of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic is now concluded. Though there were a high amount of bad episodes, there were certainly some gems, too, like "Amending Fences" and that pretty fantastic run of "The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows", "Hearthbreakers", and "Scare Master". When I was watching the episode "The Cutie Re-Mark - Part 1" -- the first of the two-part finale -- I was starting to get pretty excited about the plot. Long story short, an ordeal with time travel was going to let us see the mane six as they'd be if they never got their cutie marks the way they did. Besides just sounding like a fun, creative plot, I was hoping we'd see Pinkie Pie still on the rock farm with Maud, complete with the rest of the Pie family and her deflated mane. Unfortunately the plot got a lot more convoluted than that, but we did still did get to see Maud, sure enough.

With the past changed as I've said, a snowball effect impacts the present leaving King Sombra forcing the crystal ponies into a war against Equestria. During one of the war's battles, we see two of King Sombra's soldiers pushing a large boulder off a cliff down towards where Rainbow Dash, in battle gear, is standing. This is where Maud comes in, when she and Pinkie Pie (also in battle gear) jump in and intercept the rock, annihilating it in the same jack-hammer manner Maud did to save Pinkie in the episode "Maud Pie". Besides being decked-out in the brownish-grayish full body suit with shoulder pads and a belt and such, her mane is also different -- the back is short and spiky, directed in an upward fashion much like Limestone Pie's mane, though the front seemed to remain the same. Her tail was also cut shorter, and due to the dire circumstances, I suppose, her eyes actually visually expressed more emotion this time around, making it where her purple eyelids weren't as immediately noticeable. After their deed, the two salute and go back off-screen. From here I kept an eye out for her, but I never saw her return later in either two parts [EDIT: Oh wait, read the next post...]

This marks Maud's fifth show appearance, correct? Wow, the number's starting to get up there. We'll have to wait who knows how long until the show comes back for season 6, but let's hope for some more rock farm glory.

MLP CCG High Magic

Today the Card Checklist here on the blog is being updated with a new Maud card that's part of Enterplay's new My Little Pony Collectible Card Game expansion-thingy "High Magic". It's card #20 / Maud Pie, Pet Rocks / Friend, which shows both Maud and Boulder at the picnic from the "Maud Pie" episode. It offers some new trivia, saying, "Maud has a whole pile of pet rocks back at home, each with their own name. They inspired Pinkie Pie when she came up with her imaginary friend Rocky." The second part (which refers to the episode "Party of One") reminds me of something else I was thinking of recently and can now connect to this; In the book I just did a review of, it's stated that Pinkie had a pet rock named Rockie -- maybe "Rockie" inspired the creation of "Rocky", and maybe Maud's pets indirectly inspired the creation of Rocky by first inspiring Rockie. Seems plausible.

Hasbro FIM Collection Figure Now Out

I just went to Toys R Us yesterday and was happy to see that the mini figure of Maud in Hasbro's Friendship is Magic line was there -- and for only $2.99. I was so excited to get a better look at the toy I purchased that when I got home I forgot to take a photo of it packaged, but I had opened it carefully so I managed to just pop her back in and then take a photo. The package shows a clip of the scene the figure recreates, though I'm pretty sure it isn't directly taken from the show as her mouth is open here, and I don't remember her mouth ever being open while Gummy was on her.

Previously upon seeing photos of an opened sample, I thought the removable dress would be two separating plastic pieces that would snap together with pegs or something due to the slit that was visible, but after opening mine I found that the dress is actually one solid piece of rubber/soft plastic that sorta wraps around her in an almost clamping manner that you can wiggle her out of. This probably explains why her belt (or whatever you'd call it) isn't painted as it should be.

Also, as you may have noticed, we have more confirmation that her cutie mark is a well-cut gray rock -- not a rough cut one (which you can read more about in my cutie mark post).

For the most part, this figure is awesome. The play value interfered a bit with the figure's look (particularly the pointy Gummy-perch in her hair and the cumbersome look of her dress), but I find that giving a toy play value gives it more heart, so it's fine. Here's one of the first things I did with mine -- have her hang out with Fluttershy.

Discord Book Appearance

Wouldn't you know that right after finally reading the Pinkie Pie book that Maud gets mentioned in, I find that she actually makes an appearance in another book? Reportedly, she appears in the book "My Little Pony Discord and the Ponyville Players Dramarama" showing up for the first performance of a play the Ponyville Players are doing called "The Singing Stallion". The book is by G. M. Berrow (the same author who wrote the Pinkie Pie book) and was released July 7, 2015. I'm pretty sure I've seen the book around in book stores while in pursuit of My Little Pony graphic novels, so you can take that for what it's worth.

Episode 111 Appearance

It was October 24th, 2015, and as the time came to watch the newest episode of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic -- one where I had read Maud would appear in -- I was moderately filled with apprehension due to the memory of her dreadful appearance in episode 98 still in my mind. What if this is another bad season five episode? What if they mess up on her characterization even more? Trying to not give it too much thought, I pushed onward and watched. Episode 111: "Hearthbreakers".

Within the first minute the ponies reveal how Pinkie Pie and Applejack's families will be spending Hearth's Warming Eve together, which seems mostly due to the events of the season four episode "Pinkie Apple Pie". Around the five minute mark Pinkie mentions Maud by name, who then appears seconds later, saying, "I'm so excited to see you, Pinkie Pie. You, too, Applejack. I hope you had fun sledding yesterday." After being questioned how she knows about their sledding, she explains that she recognizes the mountainous variety of rock specks embedded in Applejack's hoof. Ha ha ha, Maud sure knows her rocks... now let's just hope they acknowledge her other attributes, too; Remember, back in the "Maud Pie" episode there was more to her than rocks -- like when she tasted Applejack's apple cider she didn't say, "It tastes like apples that grew in an orchard with tourmaline present in the soil", no, she said simply that it tasted like apples, which was something different from both the norm and a rock-obsessor, the sum of which made her less two-dimensional and much more interesting.

Next, Pinkie asks Maud how school is, which is nice as we last heard she was going on a research trip and working towards a Rocktorate in Rock Science, and though there apparently isn't much significant news (Maud just replies by saying, "If you thought quartz was high on the Mohs hardness scale, wait 'till I tell you about corundum.") Pinkie bursts out with what we're all thinking, "I missed you so much!". Maud, Pinkie, and Applejack's family then head to the rock farm where we get to see Igneous Rock and Cloudy Quartz, Maud's father and mother, respectively, followed by Maud's sisters Limestone Pie and Marble Pie no longer as foals -- a first for the show.

Limestone Pie's cutie mark is a lime-half with two stones, and she almost always displays an irritated expression on her face. At one point she's jokingly called "Captain Grumpy" by Pinkie, which is pretty understandable considering Limestone's almost threatening delivery of some of her dialogue. Marble Pie's cutie mark is of three marbles, and she has a nervous and uneasy way about her, even resorting to running away when introductions are initially made; This instantly caught my attention as I generally like shyer characters. After having had run off, we soon find her wearily inspecting some sort of crystal formation by the house when Applejack approaches. By the expression on her face we can tell she's freaked out, and just as she begins to draw back, Pinkie intervenes. "This is Marble Pie: my baby sister who's only a few minutes younger than me, but she'll always be a baby to me!" and then soon adds, "Oh, and she wishes you all a happy Hearth's Warming." Being the center of attention really has her spooked, but after Pinkie gives her a nudge she manages to give a warm, nervous smile and a simple "Mm-hm." If she's only a few minutes younger than Pinkie, I guess that makes them twins... or triplets with another sister. Or even quadruplets. I suppose it's also possible either could have been adopted.

During their Hearth's Warming Eve dinner, the families have rock soup -- soup with a rock in it which the Pie family actually eat. This harkens back to the parts in the episode "Maud Pie" where Maud eats a rock thinking it's a muffin and also how the secret ingredient to the Pie family rock candy recipe is rocks. Marble continues to look very uncomfortable during this scene due to being surrounded with company.

After dinner they move on to another tradition, Hearth's Warming Dolls. The Apples expect them to be crochet, but are surprised to find that with the Pie Family they're chiseled out of rocks. "Are you saying that rock is a Hearth's Warming Doll?" Applejack asks, pointing to a rock Pinkie's holding. "Don't be silly, silly!" Pinkie gives the rock a smack with her tiny pickaxe causing chunks to fall away with only a Pinkie-shaped remain left. "Our dolls are these little pieces! Isn't that right, Marble Pie?" Caught off guard, Marble replies bashfully once again with an "Mm-hm." Maud's then shown steadily making her own doll (which, like Pinkie, looks like herself). After Applejack gives it a try and expresses her less-than-thrilled confusion, Pinkie replies with one of the best lines from the episode; Holding up Applejack's blobby-looking doll, she says, "Oh, you're just a frown-factory because you got a weird rock." -- a true, random, Pinkie comment, and not one of her aware attempts at being funny or just being outrageous and cartoonish.

After the doll making, they move on to "the flag finding mission". Big Mac and Marble form team one, and after initially appearing full of anxiety, she turns away with a blushing smile as Big Mac does the same. Hmm, are they interested in each other or are they both just ill-at-ease and timid about the whole thing? We'll get back to this development later...

Apple Bloom and Maud form team two, which leaves the former looking a bit concerned and the latter looking a bit... well... a bit like Maud. Good. The rest of the teams are formed and then they're off to look for the "flag", which is said to be an obsidian stone... which then turns out to actually be a drawing of an obsidian stone. Finding the picture leads to another great Pinkie moment -- Applejack says, "A picture? I've been looking for a real stone, Pinkie Pie." to which she responds somewhat obliviously, "Um, that would be weird."

But I'm getting a little ahead of myself. When it shows Marble and Big Mac during their search, Marble appears sorrowful and seems to be trying to mask her awkwardness by filling the pause of their non-existent conversation with another "Mm-hm.", which Big Mac counters with one of his "Ee-yup"s. Marble says another "Mm-hm", this time with a forced smile, but then turns her eyes to the ground with a dejected frown on her face. Big Mac says another "Ee-yup", this time, too, with a smile, but then similarly reverts back to a more neutral face.

When Maud next shows up, Apple Bloom and her are talking:
Apple Bloom: "What does the rock look like?"
Maud: "It looks like something that formed when volcanic lava cooled quickly."
Apple Bloom: "Oh."
Maud: "Have you ever wished you could turn into a rock?"
Apple Bloom: "I had a dream once I was an apple."
Maud:"We have a lot in common when it comes to thinking about turning into things."

The discussion is more of the standard obsessed-with-rocks-talk Maud's expected to make now. Though, I must admit in all honestly, the longer I dwell on this episode the more I come to decide that the idea of someone just completely obsessed with rocks is indeed really interesting and I can accept it as being a large part of who she is, I just wish that it was either originally set-up as her near-sole intention or that they just created a new character to do something similar with, like a character obsessed with flowers or something -- the way they're handling it, though, is sorta like if they took Twilight Sparkle and suddenly made it where her only character-trait was that she really liked books, and just ignored her organizational skills and her fretting and such.

On Hearth's Warming day, Pinkie zips about awaking the others in her excitement. It's shown where everyone slept, except curiously it's left a mystery where Maud did. She's seen leaving the home with everypony else, so it's fairly safe to say she wasn't slumbering in a cave among rocks or anything. Perhaps she was on a couch somewhere or something. Outside, the Pies are flabbergasted to see that during the night Applejack has decorated their farm to be more akin to how the Apples celebrate Hearth's Warming, including the raising of a flagpole. She approaches Marble (whose facial expression increasingly shows how distressed she is about the intrusion of her personal space) and explains that Marble gets to raise the Equestria Flag up the flagpole since she's the youngest Pie.

All the Pies are visually alarmed in their own ways due to Applejack trying to mess with their traditions, though I guess with Maud that'd only be presumably. As the fuss begins, Maud soon makes note of a discovery and says, "Excuse me. You planted your pole on a fault line." As if in response, a large fissure suddenly forms and subsequently tumbles an important, centerpiece boulder down the side of a cliff away from the farm. And by "important", I mean "important", so much so that the Apples are declared no longer welcome, and Maud and her family begin taking down the decorations.

After some time, the Pies are trying to push the boulder back up to its old spot when Maud says, "I'm pushing as hard as I can, too.", a line that isn't really connected to the previous line (Pinkie: "C'mon, you boulder! C'mon!") and I don't quite understand the inclusion of. Whatever. After the Apples show up again and make their amends, everyone, even Limestone, smiles... except Maud, which is fine by me. When all is wrapping up, Maud is seen holding Boulder (capitalized Boulder) as Apple Bloom pets him, and then offers him a cinnamon roll. Maud smiles a tiny smile of approval, which is also fine by me. Marble and Big Mac sit by the fireplace and face each other happily when suddenly Pinkie falls seemingly from nowhere between the two, causing them to look a bit more disturbed until she says, "Marble Pie, you wanna wish Big Mac a Happy Hearth's Warming, don't you?", which causes Big Mac to smile nervously first, and then a calmer smile from Marble. Pinkie turns to Big Mac and continues with, "And you, too, right Big Mac?" Marble replies first, with one of her "Mm-hm"s, then Big Mac follows with an "Ee-yup". I'd say it's pretty safe to say that the writer's implying the two may be falling in love, and I'm against it for a few reasons. First, let me explain my thoughts on Big Mac...

For the majority of the series I thought Big Mac was a pretty good character, and maybe this was because he didn't talk much and thus didn't have much chance to ruin himself. It was even said in the episode "Hearts and Hooves Day" that Big Mac was "pretty shy", and like I said earlier, I generally like shyer characters. The first chink in Big Mac's armor that I can recall was in the episode "The Cutie Map - Part 1" when Spike reveals that Big Mac is a hoofball fan. I find football really boring and I doubt hoofball is much better. That's a more personal complaint that pales in comparison to seeing his freakish antics in the episode "Brotherhooves Social", though. For those of you who fortunately missed the episode, he goes around in a gaudy, frilly outfit making lengthy comments in a voice a southern lady might have, all with a really loose explanation as to why he'd do it -- I mean, his intentions almost seem to make sense, though poor writing blurred them into something pretty selfish. Regardless, he just went so over the top with it that he's been permanently etched on my not-favorite-characters-list. So while there's a time maybe I would've been for his and Marble's paring, I've lost my respect for him just three episodes ago, and now it just seems wrong. This also means that my view of Marble may be lowered if she's in love with this character I don't like and don't think she should like, either.

After a bit more family interactions, Apple Bloom makes what sounds like the intro into an abominable scene, "Attention, everypony! Maud wants to sing some Hearth's Warming carols that she wrote!" If Maud gets up and starts singing like Sweetie Belle did in "Stare Master", then I officially hate this show. The rest gather around, buzzing with excitement, but quickly it's found that Maud's way of singing is exactly the same as her way of reading poetry. She states, "The first one is about rocks. They're all about rocks.", an homage of sorts to the similar line she made in the episode "Maud Pie" when she read some poetry, complete with the zooming in closeup during the delivery of the second sentence. For the most part I find repeating gags is a poor decision, like with Fluttershy saying "Yay" constantly (maybe that's only a problem in the comics, I can't remember now), but with this scene, I thought it was pretty cool. So while I guess she's technically singing, we're essentially treated to more rock poetry, which goes, "Hearth's Warming is great. Like calcium silicate. What a wonderful day. As good as mica or clay." The episode fades out here, so we don't know if that's the end of the song or not. At first this "singing" sort of bugged me since I see it as more of an extroverted thing to do than I like in characters, but after sleeping on it, I like it now, and can see it very comparable to the way she "expresses herself through fashion" with a dish towel in "Maud Pie".

And now the bottom line: It was actually a good episode in my opinion. It's too bad I felt as apprehensive as I did going in with this being the case, but that's what happens when something's preceded by something lackluster or even outright bad (episode 98 in this case). As I've stated in my previous worries before, they did seem to overdo the rock-obession bit a little too much, which is a shame because that was only a facet of what made Maud great in the "Maud Pie" episode, but I'm starting to just appreciate that at least they're playing up a good thing rather than altering her character as episode 98 did. A pretty obvious problem with My Little Pony Friendship is Magic is that 99% of the time it doesn't come up with a characterization for a pony -- it just picks a stock stereotype. For example, there's Applejack: she has a farm, wears a cowgirl hat, says "yee-haw", is good at herding things, and just about anything you could imagine an old-western farmer type doing, she does. Other perfect examples are Tree Hugger, Fancy Pants, Granny Smith, Diamond Tiara, or even just the naming of characters like Featherweight and Filthy Rich. And so, with Maud originally being the outcome of actually trying to delve deeper to create a new, more unique characterization, it seems to be throwing off the other writers who don't know how to handle it, leaving them like they're trying to whittle down Maud's characterization into something that could be seen being as simple as a stereotype: someone obsessed with rocks. Stock characters have their place, and it's not like stereotyped personalities can't exist in real life, but this show just really, really over does it. One thing that's nice and shouldn't be taken for granted is that as far as I can recall, Maud's voice actress has stayed on track and is doing a great job, so that helps.

I think the combination of a "random" character (Pinkie), a rather expressionless character (Maud), a socially anxious character (Marble), an irritated character (Limestone), and their two reserved parents (Igneous Rock and Cloudy Quartz) sounds like a perfect group for a relatable entertainment experience, and the Pie family's shaping up to be one of my favorite aspects of the show. I really like the direction they took Igneous and Cloudy this time around. They're strict, but not in a particularly irrational feeling way, and I love how they talk -- that almost artificial sounding formal manner. Marble could become a favorite of mine, but right now there's just too little to make a judgement. Limestone seems like a character that has a lot of potential, maybe not as much as Marble, but still a lot; The thing is, I feel like the way they handled Limestone's anger was in a bit too tough of manner -- I'd preferred it had been in a more "I want everything done correctly and will behave as necessary to get it" way. The line between her being a bully and her being a justifiably harsh leader has been done awfully thin in her case, and though I'd like to see her pushed more onto the side of a caring pony who's just a bit stern in her job running the farm and maintaining order, I could certainly see writers continuing her down the more sinister path without even realizing that's not how she should've been handled; No one likes bullies, so why include more in the show when there are better courses of action that could be taken? Then, wrapping up, there are of course Pinkie and Maud, who have been favorites of mine for a long while.

So... was this the comeback of Maud I wanted?

Meh. Close enough.

Pinkie Pie and the Rockin' Ponypalooza Party Mini Review

I just finished reading the book "My Little Pony Pinkie Pie and the Rockin' Ponypalooza Party" (which has evidently also been released under the name "My Little Pony Pinkie Pie and the Rockin' Pony Party") and since it's the first spot anywhere to specifically mention Maud, I figured I'd do a quick review on it.

The book takes place sometime after season three (Twilight's a princess in it), likely taking place before season four since it was published before that started airing. A big draw for me about the book was that the Pie family holds a significant role in it. Pinkie's father, mother, and two sisters Marble and Limestone visit Ponyville unannounced, and soon after spotting them, Pinkie says, "Hi, Mom! Hey there, Dad! How's it going, Marble? What's new, Limestone? Where's--?" and then her father cuts her off, saying, "Your older sister is keeping an eye on the farm," This "older sister" being that first reference to Maud I mentioned.

Speaking of Maud, I learned an unusual connection between her and Pinkie -- they both have pet rocks. Pinkie's is named Rockie, and she describes "him" as being gray and "a bit lumpy". At the end of the book, the Pies are actually accepting orders from Equestrian ponies for, among other things, pet rocks. Maybe it's even possible that sometime around then is when Maud got Boulder -- who knows?

The book is definitely worth a read for any Pony fan as it feels just like an episode of the show and always had me visualizing the scenes as they'd look animated. Lots of funny moments are scattered throughout, like, for example, when Pinkie pulls something "seemingly out of nowhere" explaining, "It was almost like magic, but it wasn't -- it was just Pinkie Pie.". There's also the time when a crowd hears news about a farm closing that they didn't even know existed in the first place and all gasp because it "just seemed like the right response.". The only real complaints I have about the book are the real-world cultural nods, like with the band names "Nine Inch Tails" and "Coldhay" parodying "Nine Inch Nails" and "Coldplay", and the reason I dislike this is because I like to think that Equestria is a land better than our Earth, but when parallels are constantly drawn, it sorta ruins those hopes. Another issue I could also say about the book is that the Pie family mannerisms aren't done as well in this book as in later episode appearances in my opinion, but that's hardly the author's fault.

Episode 111 to Feature Maud

I made a post back in July about how I've seen it said that Maud would appear in another episode of season five, and though I almost never read any sort of news on upcoming upcoming episodes -- even promotional stuff -- I've been itching for some more news about the supposed new Maud appearance, and so, I gave in and read the basic wiki type blurbs. It appears I should have remained patient until next episode... two days from now. No big deal, but anyways, the episode (twentieth for the season and one hundred eleventh for the series) will be titled "Hearthbreakers", and will be about Applejack and her experience spending time with Pinkie Pie's family -- and thus Maud's family -- on Hearth's Warming Eve: a sort of holiday/celebration in Equestria seen in the episode of the same name.

I'm disappointed to see that Applejack will hold any sort of prominent position; I'm not the only one who realizes that Applejack and Rarity are severely overused, right? I mean, out of the nineteen episodes of season five so far alone, Fluttershy's hardly appeared with any significance, and when she almost does, she's overshadowed by Discord or someone else. Same with Twilight Sparkle and even Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash to some degree. It seems like since their introductions secondary characters like Spike and the Cutie Mark Crusaders (or whatever name they'll be going by now) always get more of the spotlight than Fluttershy if nopony else.

The writer of the new Maud-containing episode, Nick Confalone, reportedly made the statement that he hoped to make it feel like an episode from season one or two, which is great by me as I really dislike season five; The whole season so far's only had five good episodes compared to its seven mediocre/okay episodes, four bad episodes, and three downright horrible episodes, with even the "good" episodes having their bad parts, too. The earlier seasons made it feel like a show filled with the wonder and innocence of a kid's program that by chance had writers that took their job with unexpected seriousness. For the most part they seemed to understand that just because a show chooses to follow a moral code doesn't mean it has to be dumbed down and dull -- and worded from a different perspective, just because a show can be something an older crowd can find entertaining doesn't mean it has to be something garnering a PG-13 rating or conform to how other shows behave. This newest season, however, feels more like the people in charge said, "Hey! The show got popular! Let's usher in some of those hip, pop-culture referencing writers who won't write for everyone, but instead, will write for those 'bronies' and 'pegasisters!' " And then to put the nail in the coffin, they've started really pushing for an animation style more akin to... dare I say... SpongeBob SquarePants or something more of that ilk. I've been finding myself less and less excited about watching new installments along with reading new issues of the comic series, both of which used to be highlights in life when they came but have just gone downhill. Hopefully Nick Confalone can help turn this around -- I don't know if he's written any other Pony episodes, but if he has I hope they were memorable ones.

Here's to hoping that this episode will be truly awesome, though with Applejack, I doubt it will be. I really hope the episode gets Maud's personality right, she was just so amazing in episode 83. I'll more than likely do a review of the episode after it airs, so that'll probably be around shortly.

Maud Rock Pie MLP Collection Single Figure

For a few months now, a Maud doll/figure has been on the horizon while maintaining a mysterious status as to what it exactly was. Finally the news is out: she'll be part of Hasbro's "Friendship is Magic Collection" as a single pack. Others in the set will be Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, and Mr. Cake.

Maud comes with her dress (which is removable), along with a tiny little figure of Gummy. The inclusion of Gummy -- in a weird pose, too -- initially seems like an odd choice of accessory, but actually he's the answer to another question; A few posts ago, I was wondering what was up with that spike of hair by Maud's ears, and it's now clear that it's there so that Gummy can perch himself on Maud like he did in the "Maud Pie" episode right after Pinkie Pie so perfectly delivers the line, "Maud and I better get going, too! I want her to taste the rock candy we're gonna use for our best friends necklaces! Aw yeah!" It seems like the theme of these figures is to represent different scenes involving Pinkie Pie from My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, with, as another example, unicorn Twilight Sparkle and her umbrella-hat representing the moment from episode 15 "Feeling Pinkie Keen".

The figures are expected to come out this November, and when I get my Maud I'm planning to go outside and grab a little pebble to act as Boulder.

Row & Ride Swan Boat with Paper Maud

As part of their "Explore Equestria" line-thingy, Hasbro will be making a posable Pinkie Pie figure that comes with a "Row & Ride Swan Boat" expected to be out this November. As you can see in the photo, the package's paper/cardboard display includes a Maud Pie that can ride in the back of the boat.

This seems a little odd considering there still isn't a proper Maud figure made by Hasbro, so could this be a sign that they have plans to make one, possibly as a "posable pony"? Or is it Hasbro throwing in the towel and saying, "Here, this little standee is the best we can do"? Regardless, I sorta want the set just so I can have the little Maud, but I doubt that can justify the price.

"Rockin' Pony Party" Book with Pinkie Pie Plush

Supposedly Maud's first specific mentioning was in a book titled "My Little Pony Pinkie Pie and the Rockin' Ponypalooza Party!" (or sometimes, evidently, "My Little Pony Pinkie Pie and the Rockin' Pony Party") released originally back in 2013 (read my "Maud Pie's Earliest Mentions and Appearances" post for more information). In the UK, it appears that the book has been released again, this time along with a five inch Pinkie Pie plush. Speaking of which, I'm still waiting for a Maud plush. One, might I add, without unjustified glitter like so many other My Little Pony plush have.

Funko Vinyl Collectible Figure Announced

When it was first heard that a Funko mini vinyl figure of Maud would be released, it was speculated that a larger version would also be made; That speculation has now been confirmed, complete with pictures.

Though it hasn't been released yet, it'll certainly be a must-buy for me. I admit I still haven't got the mini one yet since I can't quite bring myself to gamble on its blind-packaging, but luckily that's not an issue with this larger one.

New Picture of a Maud Mini Figure

A picture of a previously unseen Maud mini figure has popped up, possibly of the one that could be part of Hasbro's "Friendship is Magic Collection". Alternatively, it could instead be for inclusion in a future wave of the blind-bagged My Little Pony mini figures currently on their 14th wave. I got a Fluttershy from Wave 12 which, though not 100% show-accurate, is still adorable and totally worth buying, but what made it easy to get is that the "blind-bag" packaging actually had a little transparent window on the back -- so hopefully if Maud finds her way to Wave 15 or something that window will still be there.

Anyway, back to this Maud figure. As you can see, it looks great as far as the picture shows... except one thing... what's with that spike of hair by her ear? Hopefully this is just a prototype or something and not really just an uncalled for bump on her head. I'd almost think maybe it was there to hold a hat in place; Maybe it will come with the helmet she wore in Episode 83 (I think it's called a pickelhaube).

Hot Topic Variant Funko Mystery Minis Series 3

I've read that the My Little Pony Funko Mystery Minis Series 3 figures are expected to come out in October as opposed to September as I've previously read. But with that said, I also saw someone on YouTube say that the figures are out already, even showing a set of Hot Topic exclusive ones they had in their possession. The same day the video was posted I coincidently went to Hot Topic and didn't see them, and they aren't on Hot Topic's website, either. So, who knows when exactly they're coming -- let's all just be on the lookout. Anyways, back to the Hot Topic exclusives, it turns out there will be a Maud variant with her coat (like, her "skin", not her dress) colored black instead of it's usual gray. I'd probably buy one of those if they weren't blind-bagged, but since they are I'm just gonna aim to get an average one.

UPDATE 9-18-15:
Hot Topic has now added the series to their website, so it looks like it must indeed be out now.

MLP CCG Equestrian Odysseys

In Enterplay's new My Little Pony Collectible Card Game expansion-thingy "Equestrian Odysseys", there are three new Maud cards. The first (#29 / Maud Pie, Not Amused / Friend) is of Maud making a funny face, and also comes as a foil (#Pf4 / Maud Pie, Not Amused / Friend / Promo Foil).

The second (#215 / Burst of Strength / Event / Foil) is of Maud out to rescue Pinkie Pie from the memorable moment in episode 83. Equestrian Odysseys has a lot of bad cards in it subject-matter-wise, like at least two of Rainbow Dash making dumb faces and also plenty of representation from the horrid 100th episode, but there are some good ones, too, such as the "Burst of Strength" card. By the way, I've updated the Card Checklist here on the blog to include these new cards.

Maud Hasbro Figure in Stores

Just a quick post this time. I believe the My Little Pony Pony Mania Maud Hasbro figure is now available in Toys R Us stores for $9.99. Not much else to say than that.

UPDATE 9-1-15:
Yep, it's definitely out. I saw it while at Toys R Us today, and though I did snag some photos, I didn't buy one because... well... just look at it:

I mean, seriously, when they had to edit this art of Maud to be smothered in flowers for the back of the box, they should have realized the design would be inferior to just a normal Maud. Also on the back is a quick blurb about Maud saying "Maud Rock Pie loves to make rock candy with her sister, Pinkie Pie!"

Funko Mystery Mini Figure Picture

A picture of the Funko My Little Pony Mystery Mini Maud figure has turned up, as you can see below.

It looks really good, and I can't wait to own one. The set is expected to come out in September with twelve figures total: Maud Pie, Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, Sweetie Belle, Princess Celestia, Princess Luna, Princess Cadance, Nightmare Moon, Shining Armor, Spike, Queen Chrysalis, and Cheese Sandwich. I've been sort of debating whether I wanted to get the Cutie Mark Crusaders' larger figures or not, but seeing as I could end up with some of the mini versions of them during my pursuit to get Maud, I'll probably skip them.

Maud Pie "Doll" Listed on Amazon

A lot of new My Little Pony products are on their way as announced on Amazon, including something listed as a My Little Pony Maud Pie Doll. Unfortunately, the description's sort of the opposite of descriptive, with the majority of what we're told just being generic stuff about My Little Pony which leaves us with only a vague idea of what the product could even be. One thing that appears noteworthy is that it states how you can "Style their hair and dress them up", but when comparing notes to past My Little Pony product descriptions, you find that even figures without style-able hair mentions this, such as this Flam figure pictured.

Speaking of that Flam figure, it seems likely when analyzing past Amazon releases that the Maud figure will indeed be part of the same Hasbro Friendship is Magic Collection line he is, though this isn't yet confirmed. Personally, I sort of think of a "doll" as a plush or something Barbie-esque, but I guess Amazon and/or Hasbro may think differently.

Overall the Friendship is Magic Collection seems pretty cool, but from the looks of it they're made so that any accessories such as hats or other clothes have to be removable, which results in a clothed figure having a bulky, unnatural look. Since Maud wears a dress, that means she may be affected by this.

Another Season Five Episode?

I've seen it said that Maud will appear in another episode of season five. Whether this is news or just a rumor I can't say, but I'm hoping if it's true it'll be the comeback I've been hoping for since the failure of episode 98. I probably won't investigate into the matter further because I don't like having things in the show spoiled for me, but in case she really does appear again, I'll try to stay optimistic but simultaneously won't get my hopes up.

Update: Aw, man, it seems that the season's going on a hiatus until later this year, maybe around October or November, so we'll have to wait it out. I wish episodes could just be weekly, but there are constantly breaks. It'd be nice if that meant that they were taking their time to polish each episode, but I doubt that's the case -- they're probably just wasting time with that new Equestria Girls movie.

Revealed: Funko Figure Prototype

It appears that there's going to be a figure of Maud that, as far as I can say, will actually be good (no thanks to Hasbro, of course).

Before I get too far ahead of myself, allow me to explain for those of you unaware: toy manufacturer Funko has been releasing mini figures of different My Little Pony characters in blind-box packaging called My Little Pony Mystery Minis. I actually bought one some time ago hoping to get Fluttershy, but received Vinyl Scratch, instead -- that's how these generally work. The next wave coming is Series 3, which will include Maud Pie as evidenced by a prototype that's turned up. What's particularily exciting is that this means it's likely she'll also be released as a larger figure in Funko's Vinyl Collectible figure line, which are pretty much just the mini figures scaled up. I own a half dozen of the Vinyl Collectible figures already and am very satisfied with their quality, so I'm left with minimal concern about how a Maud one would look. I even sent Funko a message several months ago suggesting they add her to the line, so obviously I'm pumped for this.

Now, there is one major, major issue with the mini figures as I mentioned: the blind-box. Just to get the Maud figure requires gambling a decent amount of money with slim chances of actually managing to get her the first try. It could very well cost someone over twenty or thirty dollars just trying to get it. Is that worth a shot at something just a few inches tall? With that said, I'm sorta caught in between being excited and not. It's probably going to be a really nice figure, but let's just say I'm way more excited about the prospect of the larger, non-blind-box figure -- let's hope that gets made.

Lastly, it should be mentioned that Funko figures can come in variations, such as glittery versions or stylish black-based versions (some or all being store exclusives). If they apply any variations to Maud, I sure hope they keep them to a minimum. Variations and exclusives are two of the worst things in collecting, with blind-packaging also becoming an increasingly frequent issue. A lot of companies sure like being jerks.

Available Online: Maud Hasbro Figure

The My Little Pony Pony Mania Maud Hasbro figure is now available for purchase at toysrus.com for $9.99 with, I'd presume, shipping costs.

It's description is the same as the toysrus.com one I mentioned in another post, except they've made minor changes, including the deletion of the "s" in "adventures", stating, "You'll have the best My Little Pony adventure with this lovely Maud Rock Pie figure". I suppose this means that they've since determined that the figure is only capable of producing a maximum of one My Little Pony adventure, though it is the best one possible.

The product's description still laughably explains that the figure "looks just like her [Maud]", even though it really doesn't. In fact, yesterday I was strolling through the Toys R Us My Little Pony aisle when I came across the Photo Finish figure (also part of the Pony Mania thing), and after taking a look at her design, I think I know why Maud's bangs are too long -- her design is probably just swiped from Photo Finish's, whose bangs are meant to be longer. But, alas, this is expected from Hasbro -- the most rehash-y company to ever produce toys (just ask the Star Wars collectors).

Anyway, I'm still gonna hold off and just get my Maud in stores if I get one at all, but I'm also still cheesed off about the flower designs. It would have been forgivable if they would have released an average Maud first.

More Hasbro Figure News

The My Little Pony Pony Mania Maud Hasbro figure that I've previously posted about (the one where she looks like she's infected with some flower rash) has got some updated news. According to information on toysrus.com & toysrusinc.com, it'll first be available at the Entertainment Earth Booth at the San Diego Comic Convention and online. Then, later this year, it will also become available at Toys“R”Us stores. My guess is that the convention and online ones will have some sort of differentiating sticker variation, but considering it's not not even a very good representation of Maud anyway, it certainly doesn't seem worth the bother to get multiple versions. I'm just gonna wait and see if I can find it in stores later on if I even get one.

It's sorta funny; on toysrus.com it says of the figure,
"Be part of the Ponymania with Pinkie Pie's sister, Maud Rock Pie! This beautiful pony figure looks just like her, and she wears an outfit that's all flowers. You'll have the best My Little Pony adventure with this lovely Maud Rock Pie figure!"

And on toysrusinc.com it says an extremely similar thing, but omitting the part about it looking just like her,
"Fans can join in on Ponymania with PINKIE PIE’S sister, MAUD ROCK PIE™. This detailed and beautiful pony comes complete with an outfit featuring all kinds of flowers, perfect for kids and collectors looking to have the best MY LITTLE PONY adventures."

I wonder if the toysrusinc.com one was written second, and they just said, "Whoa, this thing doesn't look 'just like her'. The last I checked she didn't have flowers all over her face!"

I don't like things being online or convention exclusives when they don't need to be, so this hasn't helped my lack of enthusiasm towards this figure.

Maud Pie #E83 Series 3 Trading Card

Series 3 Trading Cards
Episode
#E83
Maud Pie

This card shows a picture of Maud and Pinkie Pie on the rock farm where they both grew up. Pinkie Pie is setting off an impressive display of confetti from nowhere in celebration of her five Ponyville friends bonding with her sister. On the back, it also shows a small picture of Maud as she pummels away the rock towards the end of the episode. It'd have to be challenging to pick just two pictures to represent the whole episode, and though I totally agree with their first choice, I think I'd have picked something different for the back picture -- maybe her with Boulder or maybe even some of Pinkie's crayon drawings of the two.

Text on the back of the card gives an episode synopsis, saying, "Pinkie's sister is visiting, and oh how she hopes everything goes well so they can make best friend rock candy necklaces together! Pinkie's friends learn quickly that Maud Pie doesn't express herself the same way that her sister does, and it looks like they might not even end up as friends. Luckily, it turns out that loving Pinkie is a great reason to bond together as friends, and they exchange rock candy necklaces after all!" Ah, yes, what a great episode.

Also on the back, it lists a quote they think of as "Quotable", offering up Maud's recited "Rock. You are a rock..." rock poem, which seems like a pretty good choice. Their trivia question is "What is the name of Pinkie's obstacle course?" Gee, that's got to be the most challenging question to ask, right? I know the answer combines the names of the seven ponies and something about "fun time", but I don't know it off the top of my head. The answer, though, as they tell us, is "Pinkie-Rainbow-Rari-Twi-Apple-Flutter-Maud Fun Time!"

Rock Poetry #S4 Series 3 Trading Card

Series 3 Trading Cards
Sticker
#S4
Rock Poetry

This is a sticker that shows a portrait of Maud situated next to her poem, "Rock. You are a rock. Gray. You are gray. Like a rock. Which you are. Rock." which she recites in the "Maud Pie" episode. Behind the poem is the rock-slide from the "Pinkie-Rainbow-Rari-Twi-Apple-Flutter-Maud Fun Time" obstacle course, and the whole sticker has a calming purple tone to it. The back is blank, as is to be expected. I find it really neat that one of the series' stickers was given to Maud.

Maud Pie's Cutie Mark

(Note: This was first published 6-4-15)

When looking at Maud, it's not immediately evident what her cutie mark is due to her dress covering it up. To begin our analysis of the situation, let me start by explaining for those unaware -- a cutie mark, as Cheerilee says in the episode "Call of the Cutie", "appears on a pony's flank when he or she finds that certain something that makes them different from every other pony." From this, we'd guess Maud would probably have some sort of rock.

After getting the My Little Pony Collectible Card Game "Rock N Rave 2-Player Starter Set", I was examining the Maud Pie Mane Character card and noticed a silhouette of a five-sided diamond shape behind the text. That spot is usually reserved for a depiction of the pony's cutie mark, I thought, and theorized that the diamond shape might be hers. Well, sure enough, some viewers of the "Maud Pie" episode noticed that just for a split second or two, you actually are able to see her cutie mark as she traverses the "Pinkie-Rainbow-Rari-Twi-Apple-Flutter-Maud Fun Time" obstacle course, and it is indeed a diamond shaped rock. The size in the episode was too small to really make it out, and the only enlargements I've seen online seem likely to be tampered with, so it was unclear if the rock is rough or well-cut.

Then came along the My Little Pony Series 3 Trading Cards Character card #14 "Maud Pie", which on the back shows a clear picture of her cutie mark as being of a well-cut rock... but it additionally shows a mislabeled rock, so I guess it's not the most trustworthy source.

Lastly, there's the upcoming Hasbro figure, which shows her cutie mark to be the same as the card does, though the only pictures to surface so far may be just of a prototype.

As a concluding answer to the question of Maud Pie's cutie mark, I'd say it's fairly safe to assume that it's of a well-cut gray rock. The four sources seem to point toward it, and, after all, rocks certainly are a part of what makes her "different from every other pony", aren't they?

Enterplay Play Mat

For the My Little Pony Collectible Card Game, Enterplay released a 13.5 inches by 24 inches play mat that features Maud reciting poetry at an "Open Mic Poetry Slam". It was apparently available at the Enterplay booth at the 2014 New York Comic Con back in October, and the last I checked, it's also now available through the Enterplay Store website for $20.

The art was done by Deviant Art member "Pixelkitties", who has done other My Little Pony art for Enterplay before. For the most part it's pretty well done, especially the background, but there's several things off in regards to Maud -- she has a buckle on her belt, her mane has too many lines drawn on it, her eyes are positioned poorly, and the back of her mane has what seems to me to be an unnecessary addition.

The art was also used for two cards for The Crystal Games expansion thingy, one being card #112 "Poetry Slam", and the other being its foil version, #f39 "Poetry Slam".

Enterplay Deluxe Dice Collection

Enterplay (the company that makes all the My Little Pony Trading Cards and Collectible Card Game cards) has revealed a Deluxe Dice Collection they plan to release at the end of the summer. The picture revealed is just a digital render and not final, but it shows Maud Pie on one of the die, along with her name on the box.

Enterplay states that there will be "a few different versions", so maybe there will even be an entire Maud set. They're slated to have six dice, a gaming pad, a promo foil card, and a velvet pouch, and the post also makes mention of it including "full set (3 copies) of game play exclusive cards" which I can't quite decipher the meaning of.

Maud Pie's Earliest Mentions and Appearances

These moments are where it all started -- Maud Pie's earliest mentions and appearances. I researched this all a fair bit, but I'd like to apologize in advance if anything's incorrect.

The first thing that could be considered even a hint to Maud's existence was on April 15, 2011 with the airing of the My Little Pony Friendship is Magic episode "The Cutie Mark Chronicles" where a portion of Pinkie Pie's family is introduced during a flashback. Among them are two sisters reminiscent of Maud, but she herself is yet to be introduced.

Maud's first specific mentioning, though not by name, was in a book titled "My Little Pony Pinkie Pie and the Rockin' Ponypalooza Party!" (or sometimes, evidently, "My Little Pony Pinkie Pie and the Rockin' Pony Party") released July 2013. When Pinkie Pie sees the four family members mentioned above visiting Ponyville, she says, "Hi, Mom! Hey there, Dad! How's it going, Marble? What's new, Limestone? Where's--?" and then her father cuts her off, saying, "Your older sister is keeping an eye on the farm," This "older sister" is, of course, referring to Maud.

The first time Maud actually appears in the show is in the episode "Pinkie Pride" (first airing February 1, 2014) when she's seen in a family photo as a filly along with her three sisters, her mother, and her father. Pinkie Pie says of the photo, "Oh, I remember this one -- my first party ever." Since her first party was depicted in the aforementioned flashback, it suggests the photo was taken during those events, meaning it's probable that Maud was merely absent for the beginning duration we saw and joined mid-party. Pinkie Pie also goes on to say, "My whole family was there", and the "Rockin' Ponypalooza Party!" book also seems to confirm that Maud was there, saying, "Usually, a little laughter and fun could ease even the worst problems! It had even worked the day Pinkie had gotten her cutie mark. She'd thrown her very first party for the whole Pie family, and they'd all laughed and danced and smiled!"

Then, on March 15, 2014, the episode "Maud Pie" first aired, and Maud truly appears in person (or is that "in pony"?) for the first time. She's heard speaking, seen moving, is no longer a filly, and is actually given a name for the first time. This episode is what made her an instant legend... what else can I say?

Back when I first saw "Pinkie Pride", I totally missed the fact that the family photo showed a sister not in "The Cutie Mark Chronicles", and when I first saw "Maud Pie", I just assumed Maud was one of the sisters from that episode, too. I'm guessing this happened with a lot of people, but it's still sorta surreal thinking back to it all now -- I mean, I was witnessing Maud in the making without even knowing that later on she'd become my second favorite pony.

Episode 98 Appearance

A month ago, I mentioned how I read that Maud might appear in a Season 5 episode, and with the seventh episode of the season, "Make New Friends but Keep Discord", it's happened. I don't pay attention to who writes which episode because I want to keep an open, unbiased mind each time, but I think it's safe to say this one wasn't by the same writer as the episode "Maud Pie".

Ugh.

Yeah, y'know, when I started this blog I fully intended it to be me just saying how great Maud is and never expected me to do much criticizing, but this episode was baaaaad. Even before Maud appeared, the whole thing just had a weird feel to it. A lot of dumb stuff happened like fairly prominent pop culture references, an obnoxious new character, the dreaded characterization breaking, and more.

In the first half, Pinkie Pie is explaining who she wants to bring to this year's Grand Galloping Gala, saying, "I was gonna ask my mom because she's, y'know, my mom, but it turned out she didn't wanna go, so I started asking around and around and around and I couldn't think of anypony and I was about to just go by myself, but then I realized of course! Who loves fancy, exciting affairs more than anypony else? My sister Maud!" Yep -- the first bad episode of the season and it was the one with Maud's return. One weird coincidence is that earlier that very day I had made a post about the My Little Pony Series 3 Trading Cards card of Maud Pie that said how she "Secretly dreams of someday attending the Grand Galloping Gala."I had theorized that maybe it was a hint towards a future episode, and I guess I was sorta right, though they didn't play up Maud's part at all (and, yes, I know I posted my Gala prediction after the airdate of the episode, but I hadn't seen it until two days later).

As the episode continued, I couldn't help but feel like I had missed a season or something because the whole thing just didn't feel like My Little Pony. For example, there's a part where Rarity acts embarrassed upon having her dress removed and covers herself with her arms -- as if she didn't normally walk around unclothed like most ponies do. It was a really stupid moment that just doesn't match the show's humor and serves as a sort of ambassador for how this episode was.

Anyways, back to Maud. She physically pops up around the thirteen minute mark wearing a glittery gown that seems to match the color of her usual dress which was fine. Soon, she's seen again at a table talking to another pony. Eventually, when Discord is doing some horrendous standup comedy routine, Pinkie Pie turns to Maud and says, "Maud! Jokes!" to which she replies, "My favorite." I dunno about this. I don't think of Maud as someone who'd be enthusiastic for some standup -- I feel like her mind works in an uncommon way ("It doesn't talk. It's a dress.") that wouldn't worry itself over standard, juvenile standup. It's possible she's only being sarcastic, but that also doesn't seem her style, especially towards Pinkie Pie. I guess I think of Maud as being real straightforward and, y'know, saying apple cider "tastes like apples" -- I don't think of her as being a sarcastic jokester. Soon in the same scene, Discord says that knock-knock jokes are "the most basic of jokes!", to which Maud heckles back, "You're the most basic of jokes." Hmm. Again, I dunno -- I think it's out of character for her to do anything that could be considered mean, but then again, Discord deserved to be put in his place for his annoying display, maybe I should be thanking her. The fact that she's making a really strange face the whole time she says it and during its response doesn't help any.

Now even with all that, here's what may be the worst Maud part: At one point, the room is flooded with an ooze, and to stay out of it, Pinkie Pie uses Maud as a sort of raft and paddles along with an oar. What? I'm assuming it's just to push the whole "ooo, look how expressionless Maud is no matter what's going on" thing, but that's stupid. I mean, just because she doesn't express herself the same way others do doesn't mean she's an unresponsive vegetable or something. I'd like to convince myself it was just an attempt at showing how the two siblings have a very strong bond or something, but at this point, trying to cover the tracks of bad writing is useless.

The last Maud speaking part is when Discord says, "I think I may actually grow to like this multiple friend thing." and she says, "I like it, too." I actually think this was good. It connects Discord's situation with Maud's from the "Maud Pie" episode, and when saying it, she's not being mean, she's not making a weird face, and she's not... being a boat.

As I think I've said before, Fluttershy is my favorite pony, but even she seemed off in this one. All around it was just a bad episode, with "Dragon Quest" as the only competition for worse that I can think of off the top of my head... but at least that one had that awesome Fluttershy beginning. They even messed up on Celestia, making her act a bit too informal at the end. The new friend, Tree Hugger, could actually have been really interesting with her discussions of auras and chakras and such, but they insisted on taking a stereotypical hippy approach, not even letting her talk without sounding drugged out with some New Age music playing in the background. So stupid.

Honestly, I wouldn't have liked "Make New Friends but Keep Discord" regardless of Maud's inclusion, so it's really a shame she got caught up in it. We've waited over a year for her triumphant return, and it turned out a disappointment. I would have rather she not returned at all. Remember when I explained my hopes about a possible future Maud appearance in that one post? I said things like, "I don't want to see her break character for a "wow" or "funny" moment as often happens on TV etc." Though I'm not sure I'd say they went that far, I do feel like they had her acting almost as a parody of herself or something. I also said in the post, "there's definitely hope that another Maud appearance could be a good thing, though it's inherently risky with such a quirky, offbeat characterization that was accomplished so well the first time." This episode represents exactly what I was worried about. Lastly I said "it really would be fun to see Maud's canon augmented." Note how I specifically said "augmented", not just "continued" or, as in the case of this episode, "tarnished".

This episode makes me think: Did I jump the gun on making this blog? Is Maud really my second favorite pony or was "Maud Pie" just a good episode? The lesson here is that having characters written by someone who didn't create them is always risky and is all too likely to result in at least one messed-up moment. I like very unique characters, ones that hardly seem to exist in American fiction, and though Maud fit the requirements for my taste, letting some random writer come in and try writing her is ruining it. Let's hope for a good comeback episode...

Post update 5-30-15: Geeze, I just learned that they even spelled Maud's name wrong in the script...
